She is twenty-one and at a crossroads in her life. Does she stay in familiar Edinburgh feeling lonely - or join her friends in London? But a new boyfriend makes the decision easier. However, events beyond her control and knowledge interfere and although she quickly marries she becomes aware that maintained surfaces hide deep flaws. Unfolding over the years are the underlying motives of those closest to her all driven by the worst and best of intentions. Shocking revelations and an unexpected meeting trigger developments and she reassesses her life. By late 1964 she has reached another crossroads and again has choice, but what she thinks she wants eludes her. But there's finally resolution and satisfaction gained without reproach or honour lost.
