War and "The Second Coming" have erupted in Nis. The hammers of the Orange Light led by Kai Aphas, a former prisoner of Nis, have rained down upon the Tribe of Shadows intent on exterminating everyone beneath the surface. Secretly, Virgil, a Hy-mun from the surface, and Dan-te, an emissary from the Remnant of the Tribe have followed the Hammers back to Nis to stop Tanas's Third Great Attempt before it destroys them all. Meanwhile, Reye and Ann, two more Hy-mun prisoners in Nis, begin their own plans amidst the chaos to stop the Third Great Attempt and free their friend Stella who is still a prisoner in Nis.
