Alicia and Matthew have successful saved Travis and returned from the past, only to face some very dire consequences. With the death of Matthias the very foundation of Alicia's life is shaken, and Matthew has lost the only real parent he has ever known.

Now the two have another issue to deal with. They have all aged by at least ten years. To the outside world Alicia and Matthew are now adults, and Travis is an unruly teenager. He has the ability to speak, but sometimes Alicia wonders if that is a good thing, as he has a chip on his shoulder he is not afraid to show off. With their lives changing so much and so quickly it feels as if there is quicksand beneath Alicia's feet.

She clings to the only steady source she can, Matthew. Matthew is just as determined to hold on to her, and the two decide to take their new roles as adults much more seriously than expected. Alicia's parents must move away because there is no way to explain how a toddler has become a teenager overnight. At first Alicia is expected to join them, but the idea of leaving Matthew is too much for her. Besides, she does not feel as if she has a role as a child in their family any more.

She wants Travis to have a new start, to live in a place where no one knows about his past. She thinks by him moving away with her parents that he will finally have a chance to live the normal life she never got to. Travis sees things very differently, and instead of understanding her sister's intentions he is very unhappy by the decision of those around him to move him away from his sister.

Meanwhile Alicia is confronted with a hard decision. Face the unknown, or accept Nicolas as a teacher once more. Matthew is also drawn into a strange place when Rochelle insists that he needs a teacher as well. What neither of them realize is that as they succumb to the will of these two teachers they are dooming themselves to inevitable battle.

When Alicia finds that Matthew is not as interested in her as he once was, she believes that he really has moved on from their relationship. She throws herself into her training with Nicolas, as Matthew does the same with Rochelle. As wise as life and tragedy has caused the two to become, they are blind to the truth, that they are being pitted against one another in a battle they are not even aware is occurring.
